What I really wanted was to control the volume from the same remote that I was using to change channels. The only way to change the volume is to use the Sonos app on my smartphone or by reaching into the equipment cabinet and physically pressing the volume buttons on the Connect Amp (I know, I know, first world problems.). Since then apt-get has been updated to use LIRC 0.9.4 which changed a lot and broke the original instructions.
